สาเหตุหนึ่งที่ Dunedin ได้ชื่อว่าเป็น "เมืองมหาวิทยาลัย" ก็เนื่องจากในจำนวนประชากรประมาณ 120,000 คนที่อาศัยอยู่ในเมืองนี้ มีผู้คนกว่า 40,000 คน หรือ 1 ใน 3 ที่มีวิถีชีวิตผูกพันกับมหาวิทยาลัยแห่งนี้ในทางใดทางหนึ่ง

ข้อมูลปี 2019 แสดงให้เห็นว่ามีนักศึกษาต่างชาติจำนวนประมาณ 3,000 คนเลือกมาเรียนที่ UO จำนวนนี้กว่า 800 คน มาจากสหรัฐอเมริกา, 263 คนมาจากมาเลเซีย (ซึ่งใกล้กับสิงคโปร์และออสเตรเลียมากกว่าและกลับบ้านง่ายกว่าแต่เลือกมาเรียนนิวซีแลนด์, 69 คน มาจากอังกฤษ และจำนวนนักศึกษาจีน (525 คน) บวกกับจำนวนนักศึกษาจากอินเดีย (149 คน) ยังน้อยกว่าจำนวนนักศึกษาที่มาจากสหรัฐอเมริกา (804 คน) เสียอีก!
โดย Otago Medical School เป็นโรงเรียนแพทย์ที่คุณหมอชาวไทยนิยมไปเรียนต่อเฉพาะทาง หรือเรียน PhD ซึ่งเปิดโอกาสให้สามารถพาคู่สมรสและบุตรอายุต่ำกว่า 18 ปีติดตามไปอยู่ด้วย โดยได้รับเงื่อนไขพิเศษคือคู่สมรสสามารถทำงานได้ และบุตรสามารถเข้าเรียนในโรงเรียนรัฐได้ฟรีไม่มีค่าใช้จ่าย
