New online courses at Languages International

We hope you’re safe and well. We’d like to give you an update on what’s happening for Languages International in this extraordinary time.

  • While New Zealand remains under a complete lockdown, we are continuing to teach our classes online. We’re using Zoom to provide virtual classrooms and an educational platform called Edmodo to organise materials and post messages. We are also running a virtual version of our Learning Centre, where students can interact directly with a teacher to get support in their learning, and a virtual Conversation Café, where students can drop in via Zoom to catch up with teachers and classmates.
  • We’re hopeful that we’ll be allowed to go back to operating our school on-site again by the end of April: our government will announce their decision about this early next week.
  • At the point where we resume on-site operations, we want to also continue offering online classes for students who are not able to come to New Zealand at the moment. Here’s what we plan to offer, initially:

Conversation

Led by our fantastic regular teachers, providing conversation, speaking and listening development and fun. The aim is to help students develop their English language skills so that they can connect with speakers from around the world.

Level: Lower intermediate to intermediate (B1 to B1+)

English for University Primer

Led by our fantastic regular teachers, this course aims to help students start developing academic English skills and language for study in an English-speaking study setting. They will learn academic vocabulary, read academic articles, develop writing and practice listening and speaking. It is excellent preparation for our on-site English for University – Higher course.

New university pathway at Languages International for admission to any of New Zealand’s 8 universities

Languages International is one of just three schools officially approved to offer a pathway programme – an Approved Pathway Assessment – for admission to any of New Zealand’s eight universities. This is the result of an agreement that English New Zealand and Universities New Zealand signed in 2019.

A student who completes our English for University – Higher course to the required standard will have fulfilled the English language entry requirements for university study, avoiding the need to take an exam like IELTS, TOEFL or PTE (note that students will also have to meet the academic entry requirements for their chosen course and university).

At Languages International, we already have many years of experience in delivering this course and helping students to get ready for their university study – see what our students think – and we’re excited to welcome students onto their new study pathway from 29 June!

Dear Partners,

This thing moves quickly, doesn’t it!

  • From Wednesday we will be teaching all classes online from teachers’ homes to students’ accommodation.
  • Tomorrow, Tuesday, there will be no classes, so that we can prepare for online learning.

We are moving teaching online because New Zealand is moving to a full lockdown from Thursday to try to control the virus.

For at least the next 4 weeks, everyone has to stay home and work or study from home. Only essential businesses such as supermarkets and medical services can stay open. People can go outside to exercise and buy food etc but they need to keep good separation.

We will base our teaching around Zoom and Edmodo and of course we aim to maintain the high teaching standard we are known for. The timetable will be based on normal school hours. We will also make sure that students get as much social support as possible while they are at home.

Best wishes for the situation wherever you are.

Stay safe,
